Research Commercialization
Research commercialisation is the process by which new or improved technologies, products, processes and services that have arisen from research are brought to market. It is a valuable mechanism that enables us to solve real problems and fulfil unmet needs, creating significant economic and societal value as a result.
The route to success is shaped by the unique nature of your innovation, your target market and long-term goals. UKRI is here to help you navigate the commercialisation landscape, supporting you every step of the way.

Research Commercialization: Bridging Innovation and Impact
In India, while academic research output is steadily growing, the commercialization rate remains significantly low. A vast majority of research findings remain confined to academic journals and conferences, with limited translation into market-ready solutions. The Research Commercialization Initiative aims to bridge this gap by fostering a culture of innovation-driven entrepreneurship within Indian colleges.
This initiative will focus on identifying high-potential research, providing structured support in the form of IP protection, industry collaboration, prototyping grants, and startup incubation, and enabling faculty and students to convert their research into viable products, startups, or licensing opportunities.
With the support of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs), business mentors, and industrial partnerships, this initiative will drive patent-to-product conversion, enhance the global competitiveness of Indian institutions, and significantly improve their contribution to India’s innovation economy.
